Before moving on to other matters, let’s cue up Marty Glickman from the Gaaaaahhden.

It’s time we must bid a sad adieu to the soon-to-be-yesterday’s-stale-bagel Big East, her intense rivalries, Dave Gavitt’s well-intentioned promise, her glory early spring days in the Garden, Big John with his shoulder towel vs. Little Louie in Macy’s ugliest sweater, and her sad but inevitable decimation and demise.

The Big East, she will be gone, but not forgot, remaining forever in our memories.

This one is sad, but inevitable. Louisville jumping to the ACC was the straw that broke the camel’s back (to coin a phrase).

It makes total sense for the hoops-only schools to do their own thing. Actually it would be more accurate to describe them as non football schools, since they need a league for their minor sports too.

Which leaves that muddled mess of Cincy, UConn, South Florida, the C-USA and Mountain West jumpers standing around looking at each other woozily like a bunch of wasted guys at closing time early on a Sunday morning at their favorite bar, looking at each other, wondering, “What da fuh, where did all the babes go?”

Thinking globally, but concerned locally, let’s hope this means the ACC and U of L can get their act together so the Cards can compete in its new home next school year.

* * * * *

I’m also thinking about Willie Taggert.

Lots and lots of talk about Western Ky hiring Bobby Petrino to replace Taggert, but what about the up and comer’s move to South Florida?

The Tampa Bay area school has been considered, “the next great college football power,” given the recruiting base, etc. Yet, it is mired in po with little mo. The potential is there, the upward momentum is not.

Especially now that last rites have been recited for the Big East, I have to wonder if Taggert made a wise move?

It ain’t lookin’ so good at this point. The Toppers and Bulls could end up in the same league.

And, lest we forget, Tommy Tuberville, come on down.

How’s the move to Cincy woikin’ out fer ya?

* * * * *

Which brings us to deposed SoFla coach Skip Holtz who, thanks to name recognition and who knows what else, has landed at Louisiana Tech.

* * * * *

While watching the very intense volleyball semi last night in which Texas stormed back to win the last two games and the match, I got to thinking about Louisville coach Anne Kordes.

If you’ve been in her presence, you know what a determined young woman she is. For awhile I’ve been trying to figure out who she reminds me of?

It finally came to me last night. Pat Summitt.

Given Kordes’s focus, given what a volleyball hotbed this town has become, given her resources, I would be most surprised if she doesn’t turn the Cardinals into a national power in the next few years.

* * * * *

Excellent ESPN.com hoops writer Dana O’Neil has written a terrific piece on the seminal Loyola/ Mississippi State NCAA game in ’63.

You can read it here.

* * * * *

I can’t help but smile at the ineptitude of the Los Angeles Lakers.

* * * * *

I watched some of the Harrrison twins last night on TV.

One has a strained hammy. Aaron or Andrew, I’m not sure. Their school, Travis, ended up winning in OT, but, to be honest, I was expecting more dominance.

Then again, I don’t watch enough high school hoops these days to discern which players are really special and which aren’t? One must assume that the recruiting gurus and Coach Cal, who was in the stands last night, know what they’re talking about.

So obsessively packed full of information is this, it allows me to actually write as if I know something.

$14.25 and cheap at twice the price.

Which is to say, despite this summer’s heat wave, I’m gettin’ ready for some football. (Though, while walking my pooch today, and shvitzing through my clothes after about two hundred yards, I was reminded of the abysmal Fahrenheit at the opening game at Papa J’s. Hopefully, this summer’s heat will have abated by UK/ U of L kickoff.)

* * * * *

U of L’s hoops season turned a little more sketchy today when it became clear that PG Terry Rozier didn’t qualify. Given Peyton Siva’s propensity to reach in for stupid fouls, a backup at point is paramount.

Russ Smith, come on down.

* * * * *

The debate over Penn State’s sanctions is ranging from one extreme to the other.

Too little.

Way too much.

I don’t know that I have anything new to add. Something needed to be done. And so it has been. A lesson needed to be taught, a statement made. And so it has been.

I am somewhat bemused by the position that the NCAA is all of a sudden proving its power. If it were so powerful in college football, there would be a 16 team playoff. But it ain’t gonna happen until Mike Slive says it can happen. And he ain’t talkin’ like that.

* * * * *

The reflections on JoePa are also skittish. So many swallowed his Kool Aid for so long, it’s stunning for those to believe that, when confronted with a situation where character shows, he proved not to have nearly as much as he would have us believe.

That said, as Bob Ryan mentioned one night on PTI, who knows how we’d react were we in the same situation. Or how would Bear Bryant or Coach K or John Wooden or Nick Saban or . . . you get my drift?

* * * * *

All of which chatter makes me think of Charlie Strong, who is, by all accounts and observation, the man we thought Joe Paterno was.

So decent does Strong appear to be, I pray it to be true.

* * * * *

I’m not sure I care so much about USA basketball in the Olympics.

That said . . . I am here late on a sunny July afternoon watching them play Spain in an exhi in my favorite city in the world, Barcelona.

The Uncle Sammies are down 13-2s as I write. Spain has hit three wide open dunks in a row then a long jumper.

It’s a rhetorical question, that title that has lured you into my lair.

But a legitimate one nonetheless.

Among the happenings this fine week:

Final Four Weekend. Now there are those college hoops fans who believe the start of practice in October is bigger. For others it’s that national signing day when we see John Calipari reveal his stack of blue chips is bigger, or Championship Week when we revel in Arch Madness. Some think Selection Sunday is bigger, or that the tournament’s opening weekend glut is bigger, yet, frankly . . . sigh . . . we love ‘em all, right?

But, you gotta admit, when it’s down to four, it’s pretty darn exciting. Especially when some teams from around your neck o’ the woods are still standing. Like this year, or likely next, when, hey, how about a FF with UK, U of L and IU? Hot ‘Lanta. Free concert by the Allman Brothers Band. Book it, Dano.

Anyway, UK won its 8th title this week. Not a bad kickoff to this seven days.

Final Four Weekend, Part Deux. The distaff version of college hoops also concluded its season this week.

Baylor won forty games without a loss, thanks to the 6-8 presence of Britney Griner. And a stellar supporting cast.

That all the #1 seeds made it to Denver proves yet again that the sport still hasn’t reached parity. That UConn didn’t make it to the title game for the second year in a row proves the presence of a benevolent hoops deity.

Now, I don’t want to get too wacky here, but watching Griner and listening to an interview with her, I kept thinking of the film, “Berlin 36.” It is the little known but true story of how the Nazis kept a female Jewish high jumper of considerable talent, Gretel Bergmann, off the German team competing in Berlin. She was replaced by Dora Ratjen. Turns out Ratjen was a man, and the Nazis knew it.

Now, I’m not sayin’ Griner’s a guy. But . . .

(Why, as I move on to the next paragraph, do I have the uneasy feeling that little section is going to get me in trouble?)

Not So Frozen Four. The NCAA men’s ice hockey championship is also this week. The semis start tonight and feature long time powers Boston College and Minnesota in one match, and upstarts Ferris State and Union in the other.

What has me smiling is that the Frozen Four is being contested in that long time bastion of ice hockey: Tampa, Florida.

I dunno? You tell me.

Final Week of Pucks. Speaking of hockey, it’s the last week of the NHL’s regular season, with several clubs still fighting down to the wire for the final Stanley Cup playoff spots.

Futbol Four. There’s probably about four of you out there that have paid attention to the European Champions League, which whittled its participants down to four this week.

Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and my faves, the Lionel Messi-led FC Barcelona qualified for that Final Four this Tuesday and Wednesday.

Fore Weekend. I’m not a big golf fan. But I am a sports fan. So I watch the majors.

The Masters is a major. It starts today.

Augusta National Golf Course, for all the pretension surrounding it, is mighty telegenic. You’d never guess that the main entrance sits on a commercial strip of thoroughfare that looks like Shelbyville Road across from Oxmoor. And that it sits in the middle of Augusta, not out in some bucolic country setting.

The club is surrounded by an imposing fence and vegetation, the message of which is: “Don’t even think about stepping foot on this property unless invited, or you’ll be shot on sight.”

Four Bagger Weekend. Baseball starts this week. Actually I think there was a game last night.

I do know my Detroit Tigers open this afternoon on the Deuce against the Red Sox with their new manager, the ever outspoken Bobby Valentine. Justin Verlander takes the mound for the Motowners. Prince Fielder, whom I will mention since his name starts with an F, makes his debut at first base for Detroit, where his daddy once played. He can hit some four baggers.

The only real baseball news that grabbed my attention is that big ass contract the Reds gave rising star Joey Votto. One scribe dubbed it “Grand Theft Votto.” Cute.

Okay, th, th, that’s all, folks.

(Except for, I suppose, spring football practice, which is, as far as I’m concerned, something to be slobbered over only by guys who used to be jayvee volunteer assistants, wearing double knit shorts. And, of course, those who think Nick Saban, not Tiger Woods, is the Real Messiah.)

– Seedy K

Just the Same as it Ever Was. Am I the only Louisville basketball fan who is tired, tired, tired of the annual roster soap opera?

Injuries.

Qualification issues.

And, in the case of Wayne Blackshear, one of the Cards’ two Golden Arches All-American recruits, both.

We’ve known for awhile that he has a shoulder injury that’s been more than a vexation for quite some time. But just learned yesterday, thanks to Gary Parrish of cbssportline.com, that, not only is U of L’s most important recruit hurt, but he hasn’t been cleared by the NC2A yet to play.

So he joins several teammates on the injured list, a key factor every year of The Rick’s underperfoming reign at Louisville. And he joins fellow star recruit Kevin Ware on the ineligible list.

Injuries happen randomly. Constant injuries season after season after season are more than coincidence. There’s a reason. Overwork? Poor preparation?

Something’s happening, and I don’t know what it is? But I know it’s long past wearing thin.

* * * * *

Network Battle of the Hand Slaps. The 49ers W over the Lions was intriguing for a lot of reasons. Two upstart squads that look to be playoff ready. Relatively young head coaches who are gettin’ ‘er done. A bruising if flawed mid October battle.

And all NFL fans are talking about in this age of If-There’s-Not-A-Controversy-Let’s-Invent-One is the post-game Jimmy-jam imbroglio between the head coaches, Jim Schwartz and Jim Harbaugh.

Harbaugh acted like a putz. Schwartz over reacted. Period.

Let’s talk about how San Fran’s D shut down Calvin Johnson, and made Matt Stafford look mediocre. How the 49ers scored late when they had to, and Detroit, at home, didn’t.

Forget the fisticuffery.

* * * * *

Blame it on the BCS. I heard several college football wags opine over the weekend say that you can’t blame the conference realignment mishmash on the BCS.

To which I respectfully respond: Bullshit.

The conference school grab is all about getting a seat at that BCS table and more than one piece of the pie.

If there was a 16 team playoff with at least one spot from all 11 major conferences assured, sanity would prevail. That would leave 5 spots open for worthy behemoths from the SEC, Big 10(12), Big 12(9), PAC Whatever, Indies, or even an extra school from the Mountain West.

Everybody would make more money. Traditional rivalries could be restored during the season. Geographical integrity would hold. December would be as exciting as March.

The Big Boys would get more seats at the table. Little Brothers would be represented.

Most Important: We’d have some damn good college football to look forward to post-season, instead of the meaningless to everybody but the bettors bowl games. And a Legitimate National Championship, won On The Field.

This is such a no brainer.

* * * * *

Stern Warning: One or Done. Those Too Rich for their Own Good pro hoopsters and the Formerly Financially Irresponsible bosses they toil for remain at loggerheads.

The Commish says get it done. Today. Or no game in your Christmas stockings, kiddies.

I saw a chart yesterday that compared the CEO to average corporate employee pay ratio for leading industrial nations around the globe. The largest disparity by far, an alarming disparity really, was the US. CEO’s here earn about 475 times what the average worker does, compared to something like 11 to 1 in Japan.

I thought of the ridiculous statements coming from some of these pampered pro basketball players, guys making millions of dollars to play a game they love.

It’s reality check time, LeBron. And you journeymen at the end of the bench. I know, I know, lots of travel, boring days in luxe hotels in cities far from home, away from family. Nagging injuries that deplete the body’s ability to recover. Yada, yada, yada.

Give it up. Get a deal done and shut up.

I’m rarely inclined to side with management is such affairs of labor. But these NBA ballers need a reality check. Immediately. As in Today, or so says Boss Stern.

World Serious Issue: Busch or Bush?. My Detroit Tigers have been bested.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Texas Rangers.

The Cardinals have tradition, the Clydesdales, “the best fans in baseball” and Tony LaRusso. But the manager is a good buddy of Bobby Knight. Guilt by association for me.

The Rangers have a funky manager, solid hitting up and down the lineup and a deep pitching staff. But Fan #1 is George W. Bush, a man whom I’d love were he MLB commissioner. Unfortunately, he took another job.

All things being equal, I’m an American League guy. Go Texas.

* * * * *

Unfortunately I did not make it out to see #1 U of L skunk UCLA, 2 zed, in the season’s soccer opener. (It was Saturday Night Datenight. The Film Babe and I took in a flick then had a lovely al fresco meal at 732 Social in the town’s new hip ‘hood, NuLu.)

I do have a couple of thoughts anyway. (Just because I didn’t see any of the game doesn’t mean I can’t comment on it. Don’t confuse me with the facts.)

Coach Ken Lolla is obviously yet another of Tom Jurich’s incredible hires. It was obvious at Akron that the guy was The Deal, and it hasn’t taken him long to vault the Cardinals to the upper echelon of college futbol.

Seven thousand plus surrounding the pitch for a collegiate soccer match in the epicenter of college hoops: Incredible.

I’ve never understood the nomenclature, “own goal.” I know what it is — inadvertently putting the ball into your own net for a score for the opponent — but the name doesn’t make sense. Own is defined as “and adjective or pronoun used with a possessive to emphasize that someone or something belongs or relates to the person mentioned.”

I dunno, shouldn’t be a “their goal?”

Anyway the Bruins gave the Cards one of those last night. Then star Colin Rolfe tallied another.

* * * * *

In case you haven’t been paying attention, baseball’s best pitcher — and Griffin McLarty’s favorite, you remember he’s the Little League kid — Justin Verlander won his 20th of the season last night. On August 27, no less, four days and a wake up from September.

The last time it happened was 2002. Curt Schilling, if want more info.

* * * * *

If you notice, there’s been an eerie silence as football season draws nigh.

It’s been a Favre-free fall.

Shhhhhhh. Don’t wake the ghost.

* * * * *

“No red shirts,” sayeth The Rick.

Which means there are going to be some battles in practice just to make the travel squad.

* * * * *

Riddle me this.

How can Andre Drummond in one day go from a hoops recruit in the class of 2012 to a member of the class of 2011 to freshman orientation at UConn to a member of Jim Calhoun’s squad?

* * * * *

COMING SOON (In a day or two in fact): The Return of Seedy K’s Pithy Pigskin Prognostications.

Each week I’ll advise who is going to win five of the best collegiate football encounters of the upcoming weekend. Remember caveat emptor is the prevailing philosophy. Wagering on college sports is illegal.

Which changes of mind, when you think about it, are not all that unusual for immature teens. Especially pampered hoopsters wined and ined from the 6th grade forward on the AAU circuit.

But studies now show, a lot of those kids are also changing high schools like the shoes they pick up as perks. Then, they’re almost as likely to transfer colleges as prep schools.

Luke Winn wrote a fascinating synopsis of the situation. If you care about high school basketball recruiting — which means all of you except that one guy in the corner wearing a leather football helmet — you’ll want to read the story.

And, you can find it here.

To Philly as a back up? Somewhere else?

What a revoltin’ develpment this is.

Yo, Rick, two words: Willie Williams. I’m talking Rick Stansbury here, not The Rick. What on earth were you thinking when you recruited Renardo Sydney?

Short of setting up character transplant surgery for this talented ne’er do well, what possible positive outcome might you have expected?

Instead of accompanying his teammates on a summer excursion, meant for bonding and team unity, Sydney is off to counseling with John Lucas in Houston. Oops.

I’ve always thought Stansbury somewhat of a charlatan since I saw him ignore an opponent’s practice several years back at an NCAA sub-regional. That’s he’d take a chance on this kid confirms what a short cut kind o’ guy the Mississippi State coach is.

Speaking of questionable transfers . . .

. . . If it quacks like a Duck . . . The peripatetic former Demon Deacon and former future U of L Cardinal and former future UK Wildcat Tony Woods will matriculate at Oregon. Quack.

Word is the school’s academic year calendar will allow him to finish his academic requirements and be eligible this coming season.

Who knew the kid was in academic limbo? We thought he was just tainted goods ’cause he smacked his GF.

And, speaking of academic limbo . . .

. . . What up with Ware & Blackshear? Why is it that these guys are still completing high school stuff? Can’t practice with the team. Can’t travel to Bahamas. Aren’t even in town.

Sounds like same ol’ same ol’ to me.

Oy Oy Oy. Tip of the helmet to the oldest Tour de France victor in decades: Cadel Evans from Down Under.

In the Alps, he survived equipment malfunction and having to change bikes, to save enough time against Andy Schleck to keep him within distance. Then, in Saturday’s individual time trial, he blew the Luxembourgian away.

And while we’re tossing bouquets, let’s fling one Mark Cavendish’s way. There’s a guy with some leg drive. He won the Tour’s last leg (and a couple others) and the Green Jersey, emblematic of best sprinter.

Go Tigers. Talking Detroit’s Tigers.

Despite going 6-4 in their last ten, and scoring five less runs on the year than their opponents, the Motowners are 7 games over .500 and two games up in the AL Central.

I’d talk more baseball, But, frankly, I haven’t been paying that much attention. Except to my team.

The Claret is Darren’s. Good for Darren Clarke.

We love when one of these old farts, a guy who has always been on the verge, but no higher, succeeds. Don’t we?

He stayed steady. Dustin Johnson gagged. Phil Mickelson did, well, a Phil Mickelson. But, oh my, did Lefty toy with us, or what? I saw his opening hole, then turned over to watch the Tour de France for a bit. When I returned to the links, PM was tied at the top of the leaderboard.

Then he turned to dust in the wind.

Interesting to me that 12 different linksters have won the last 12 majors. And several have come from Northern Ireland, where playing golf is the equivalent of a Sunday night game at Soldier’s Field in December.

It is said that the champ likes his vino. If so, he’s now got the jug to quaff it from.

Hope for President, but . . . my fantasy is Megan Rapinoe for prom date.

Abby Wambach scores the goals. But Ms. Rapinoe is the one who controlled the games for the U.S. of A..

Unfortunately she didn’t have enough yesterday. And was pulled late, because ????

As much as the women’s soccer team grabbed the country’s attention, they were really never on a roll. Never dominant. Always on the brink of what happened yesterday.

Which is letting the game slip away.

I’m still not sure how that Japanese gal scored that tying goal in regulation? But the stunner was essentially a Golden Goal. The Americans were beaten at that point.

Same Story, Different Season. A bunch of folks have inquired whether there’s more to the story about Kevin Ware’s and Wayne Blackshear’s academic situation than The Rick is telling us?

I do not know.

What I do know is that it’s not a good thing. If it’s July, with college matriculation but a month away, and these player’s haven’t yet fully completed their prep academic resposibilities, something’s amiss.

Wacked in Waco. Mark Morefield is an assistant to Scott Drew at Baylor no more.

He’s pursuing other opportunities, the story goes.

Well, mark my words, he fell on the sword. There could be trouble in the Lone Star State.

The buzz among college hoops recruiting cognoscenti is that Drew’s program is one of the two dirtiest in the game, a major NCAA punchout in waiting. (The other: Thad Matta’s Ohio State Buckeyes.)

It’s the dog days of summer, whatdaya want from me?

Rumors? Innuendo? Recruiting gossip that Jody Demling hasn’t already covered?

Nah. But I got some question?

* * * * *

Why do Gene Smith and Gordon Gee still have jobs at Ohio State?

Who will coach again sooner in college: Bruce Pearl or Jim Tressel?

Can the Indians really hold off my Tigers in the AL Central?

Would Adolph Rupp have recruited a high schooler named Shabazz Muhammad?

Will you watch the NASCAR race tomorrow night just because they’re racing here in Kentucky?

Everybody who will actually miss the NBA next season raise your hand?

Anybody got a new Kragthrope joke I haven’t heard?

I’ve been watching World Cup soccer. You?

Name the next great American male tennis star?

Should I hold a press conference to announce I won’t be playing in the British Open this year?

Anyone else watched a replay of some hoops game on Big Ten Network because you don’t know who wins, so it’s like watching it during the season?

Is it just me, or is all this posturing, arguing and legal wrangling between superrich professional sports franchise owners and superrich players just a might annoying?

Did you hear this one? Steve Kragthorpe and Les Miles walk into a bar . . .

Why doesn’t ESPN feature Aussie Rules football?

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to head down to U of L on a hot summer’s night and watch current and former Cards ball at Crawford Gym?

Is downing one of those Polly’s Freeze supersized milkshakes an athletic accomplishment?

By all accounts the woefully underachieving former Ballard Bruin steered Seneca QB DaMarcus Smith to Central Florida. Apparently, much to Smith’s chagrin, after he learned that Bender was just woofin’, and that CF’s star QB was going to remain under center. DaMarcus decommitted after signing a LOI, from which that noted maker of men, CF coach George O”Leary, wouldn’t grant a release.

So Smith is wandering about lost in BrandonBenderLand.

Which sentence in purgatory Kevin Ware has apparently been able to avoid. Ware, high a school guard of some note and significant potential, initially hitched himself to the star that was Bruce Pearl. Who, as we know, self immolated and now is but an afterthought in a black hole somewhere in a galaxy far far away.

Ware almost got brandonbendered also, by committing to — all together now — Central Florida, to play for “the greatest basketball coach” nobody’s ever heard of: Donnie Jones.

Then The Rick got to woikin’ to make it work. So, the latest news — Stay tuned it may change at any moment — is Ware’s set on wearing the red & black next season.

Along with 25 or 30 of his soon to be closest teammates, since Louisville has the longest roster since New Orleanians were lining up to apply for FEMA trailers.

The Cardinal Nation is wondering just who might stay on board, and which Cards will feel the slice of The Rick’s terrible swift sword? Who is now sitting in Roderick Rhodes’ seat?

There isn’t a doubt in my mind it will all work out, roster wise. Coach Pitino has never been shy about discarding student athletes when it was necessary to meet his plan for that particular day. Or, for sending them to minors, then recalling them if necessary to meet his needs. It was the game he played with Perrin Johnson and Bellarmine.

Tears Along The Olentangy. In a move that was inevitable, Jim “The Vest” Tressel has “resigned” as coach of Ohio State’s Buckeyes.

And, before ye acolytes of the O*H*I*O Nation start your “Ur*Ban Mey*er” chant, ya better check where those 2-time BCS champ Gators got all their tatts and how they paid for their mobiles during the Meyer Era.

There is no better gauge of how smarmy college athletics has gotten than comparing the demise of Tressel with that of Buckeye icon Woody Hayes. Hayes punched a Clemson Tiger in a bowl game, and was adios Olentangy the next day. Tressel was able to duplicitously prevaricate about his transgressions for months before “resigning.”

Though I’m sure you’re as impressed as I am that Tressel’s farewell talk to his players was “eloquent.” At least that’s what soon-to-be-former Ohio State AD Gene Smith said.

The real shot to Brutus Buckeye’s solar plexus is still to come. Wait until the powers that be start looking into hoops coach Thad Matta’s MO. It’s a constant buzz on the recruiting trail that Matta is, let us say, the coach who will go to any length to git ‘er done.

The Terrible Trio Shall Prevail. I’m talking about Dwayne, LeBron and Chris, of course. (So, first let me apologize to the Original Terrible Trio, the name given a boffo U of L hoops recruiting class in the 50s that included Don Goldstein, Alex Mantel and Harold “Unc” Andrews.)

As much as I loathe Mark Cuban, I’m sure rooting for the Mavs.

But, sigh, it ain’t gonna happen.

A Heat title appears as inevitable as The Vest’s divestiture.
