Louisville/ Memphis State Memories

I know I should be bigger than this. What I’m about to do is absolutely immature.

Then again, I remember the moment when I was jiving in a friendly manner with a kid in the concourse of Mid South Coliseum before a U of L/ Memphis State conference tourney final game. The boy’s mother grabbed her son, pulled him away from me down the hall while screaming, “How many times have I told you, you’re never never to talk with a Louisville fan!?!!?!”

So, just in case you’ve forgotten what happened the last time U of L played the Tigers in Memphis, allow me to refresh your memory with this video of the action.

There is a part of me, the part I want others to know, the part my parents raised that feels deeply for the enduring pain of a young man, put in an incredible situation who fails to perform and who is left to deal with the agony. Then there’s the other me who, when watching the clip end, felt this great sense of glee.Hey, it’s Memphis! I’m told that the Louisville player’s sympathy for Darius Washington was also greatly diminished by the fact that he ran his mouth ALL DAY LONG.

My disdain for Memphis runs long and deep. Back in the 70′s, prior to Big Brother deeming us worthy of rivalry, Dana Kirk and the Memphis fanbase were easy to detest. Trash talk was common among their players, coaches, and especially fans. “Louisville sucks” was chanted every game. With little exception, we “owned” them then, as we do today. I forgot how good it felt.
