Sunday Afternoon QB: Pigskin Tidbits & Bonus Opinionation

If Cards’ fans are pumped about Teddy B, as well they should be and are, Cats’ fans should be equally as pleased with their signal caller Maxwell Smith.

30/39 in the air. Hmmm, that looks familiar. Where did I see that number this morning? Oh yes, U of L’s QB stats. For 354 Big Blue yards. Four touchdowns. No picks.

Gotta wonder if Joker was sandbagging when he waited so long to name Smith his starter?

John L. Smith has had better weeks.

Because of some ill-advised investments he was charmed into when coach at Louisville — they went sour — he was forced to file bankruptcy.

Then his star QB Tyler Wilson couldn’t play in the second half yesterday after suffering a head injury.

The coup de grace: The Razorbacks lost in OT to Louisiana-Monroe. One more of those and Arkansas fans will be hoping Smith starts taking motorcycle rides with a GF on his day off.

The honeymoon didn’t last long for former Cardinal assistant Jim McElwain, now head man at Colorado State.

In his head coaching debut, his Rams battered rival Colorado, 22-17.

This week, his team kerplunked back to terra firma, losing at home in Fort Collins to North Dakota State, 7-22. The Bison play in the same FCS league, Missouri Valley, as Louisville foe, Mizzou State.

Talk about folks with little to celebrate after Saturday’s slate, how about the Leaders and Legends of the Big 10?

Iowa 6, Iowa State 9.

Purdue, 17, Notre Dame 20.

Nebraska 30, UCLA 36. (The only game yours truly missed this week in his Pithy Prognostications.)

Penn State 16, Virginia 17.

Wisconsin 7, Oregon State 10.

Illinois 14, Arizona State 45.

Plus, IU, which never has much to cheer about until hoops, won big, on the road at UMass. But lost star QB
Tre Roberson for the season. He he broke his leg after rushing for 105 yards and scoring TDs on runs of 50 and 39 yards.

Cody Zeller, come on down.

The first weekend of the NFL has arrived and Insight/ Time Warner customers are left without NFL Red Zone that’s part of the NFL Network. Nor Thursday Night football.

TW is the only — that’s right, only — major cable operator that doesn’t have a contract with NFL Network. The cable behemoth says negotiations are ongoing. NFL says nothing’s happening. Roger Goodall mentioned the standoff during an interview earlier in the week in an apologetic tone.

Not sure I understand this one.

Come on, fellas, can’t we all get along?

One hoops note: How does Nike mogul Phil Knight make it into the Basketball Hall of Fame?

* * * * *

Okay, one more hoops note: Will the NCAA come down on Duke and take away a national crown. Seems that student-athlete Lance Thomas, whilc balling for the Blue Devils, plunked down $30 Large for some bling.

Backed to the gridiron.

Kansas State sure is fast out of the gate. A 51-9 W in Week I over Mizzou State.

Yesterday they reamed Miami’s Hurricanes, 52-13.

I need to check with my man Joey the Vig on this one.

Florida State failed to cover the humongous 70 1/2 point spread against hapless Savannah State. The Seminoles only tallied 55, while holding their foe scoreless.

But the game was stopped halfway through the 3d, not by some mercy rule though that would have been appropriate, but by weather.

Yo, Vig, did those who gave the points lose? Or, did you wipe it off the board as a nolo contendre?

* * * * *

Missouri, Texas A & M, wilkommen to the SEC.

* * * * *

In the Our Athletes Really Are Students Bowl, Northwestern outwitted Vanderbilt, 23-13.

* * * * *

Louisville vaulted to Top 20 in the two “major” polls.

    Agree about the Time Warner/NFL Network situation Mr. Kaplan. Once again the people footing the bills get ignored.

    No shame in losing to North Dakota State. They are defending champs in FCS division and Saragin ranks them higher than many FBS schools. The Bison are tough
