Pitino’s Last Stand?: Rumor & Innuendo

Yes, I know we are but four days away from a sure to be soggy rivalry smackdown between the Cats and Cards. (Thank you, Isaac. And remember fans, no umbrellas allowed in Papa J’s.)

It’s sure to be fun and all that, pigskin bragging rights in the Commonwealth for the next annum, right?

However we should never forget during this hyped countdown to kickoff, Kentucky and Louisville are basketball schools. Forever and always.

Thus, in this week of breaking down OL vs. DL matchups, let us pause for some breaking gossip I’ve been hearing about U of L coach Rick Pitino.

I had an interesting conversation the other day with a major Cardinal fan, well-connected to the Athletic Department. He/She believes next season will probably be the final at the helm for Pitino. The person pointed out that when filling the assistant vacancy left by the departure of Pitino the Younger, Elder advised a legacy, a coach with close ties to the program, to look elsewhere for a job.

This person’s reasoning is admittedly a stretched extrapolation from one incident. But while trolling about for possible confirmation from other sources, I have received similar signals that it might be legit info.

Giving credence to the rumor are insinuations that several big boosters of the program have reached out to several replacement prospects to gauge their interest in the job, if a Pitino retirement comes about. Contacts with other boosters say they have heard similar things.

My take. These rumors have become almost an annual affair, but seemed to die down after last year’s Final Four run brightened the future. That said, I have often believed that Pitino would seriously consider stepping down and probably would retire . . . if  he wins another national title.

Okay, so there you have it. I haven’t a clue whether any of this is true or not but hoops R & I are always in season around here.

Now, which DL is going to step up in the rain on Sunday? Red or Blue?

It is not a step down when you print $3.5 million; that is a “giant leap”.

Basketball schools always? Hopefully not. That would mean weak football, which I don’t think TJ will ever accept.
