Hoopdom’s Most Smashing Saturday of Season

Louisville Cardinals won.

Kentucky Wildcats won.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers won.

Bellarmine Knights won.

Murray State Racers won, and remain the last unbeaten standing.

Duke lost. At home. On a three-pointer at the buzzer.

What more could a hoopaholic want?

* * * * *

Actually there’s an answer for that.

A television setting that automatically mutes the sound whenever Digger Phelps opens his mouth.

Or, at the very least, an app that deciphers what he’s saying and immediately translates it into understandable English.

The Player of the Day had to be Michael Snaer, for hitting two monster treys. One banked off the top of the backboard — okay, almost off the top of the board — at the end of the half. And that one that swished at the buzzer to end Duke’s fortysomething game winning streak in Cameron Indoor.

Snaer happens to ball for the Team of the Week. Florida State bested North Carolina and Maryland before yesterday’s surprise in Durham.

One coach who is gittin’ ‘er done is Cuonzo Martin, who took over Bruce Pearl’s mess at Tennessee. The Vols are still under .500, but notched another big W yesterday over Top 15 UConn.

Still wet behind the ears Jarnell Stokes went for 16/12.

Two former future U of L stars figured big in their school’s outcomes yesterday.

Fab Melo, who was a lock to be a Cardinal until the moment Jim Boeheim snatched him for The Rick’s grasp on signing day, was a factor in Syracuse’s first L of the season in South Bend.

Because he wasn’t there. Academic issues, it is said. Which makes sense to me, since the interviews I’ve heard with the student/athlete indicate he has a pronounced unfamiliarity with the English language.

His absence allowed Luke Harangody look alike Jack Cooley to go for 17/10, dominating the paint in the 2d half.

Another former future U of L pivotman Jeff Withey, now a Rock Chalk Jayhawk, converted a +1 with :37 on the clock for the winning points in Austin against the Hook Em Horns.

Mississippi State has the look of one of those teams that ends up inexplicably still playing when the Final Four combatants sort out.

Yes, Renardo Sidney is Derrick Caracter reincarnate. With all his baby fat still in place. One second he’s making an improbable block or three pointer. The next he’s catching cold as guys drive by him for uncontested layups. He spends a lot of court time just standing and watching.

But . . . Arnett Moultrie was a beast in the W at Vandy’s Memorial Gym. He went for 21/14 with 4 steals and a blocked shot.

Guard Dee Bost netted 24, including 3/6 from behind the arc. Plus he scored the game winning lay up through the back door in OT, ending Vandy’s 8 game winning streak. Reserve Jalen Steele canned 5 of the 8 treys he attempted.

Indiana State held Creighton’s Doug McDermott to only 12 points. That’s half his season average, which is 2d highest in the land.

But he grabbed 11 rebounds, and his Bluejay teammates did the rest. They hit 7 of their first 10 treys (11/24 overall) and thumped the Sycamores in the best mascot nickname battle of the day, 75-49, to improve to 18-2 on the year.

I certainly have no great love for Notre Dame. But I must admit the Irish have come up big in games against top ranked teams through the decades.

They had the not so Fab not so Melo now not so undefeated Syracuse Orange measured all day.

Let us now, the day after, turn our attention to the gridiron.

The mute Digger TV has an upgrade version. It also mutes Vitale when he strays from the game at hand. In other words it has no audio. None!

If I were Derrick Caracter, I would be insulted. That Sidney still has a uniform tells you something about the MSU program.

BB, it wouldn’t be the first time. Remember how those out in the state refs swept Jimmy Dan Connor and Anderson County into the State Tourney Finals on called fouls the big, bad school from Louisville.
