Louisville TipOff Luncheon Notes

Some things never change under the Rick Pitino regime. Most of all, there are always injured players. Always.

Van Treese injured his patella and is still a week from activity. Buckles still hasn’t received the final go ahead to play. And The Future — that would be Wayne Blackshear — still isn’t even The Present yet. He is still plagued by a mysterious shoulder injury. The Rick said he’s expected back “in a week.”

So it goes.

School president James Ramsey did a quick meet and greet with the press before lunch. He was suitably politically correct in answering questions about conference affiliation. Which is to say he offered nothing.

I would have expected nothing else.

Tom Jurich walked by the assembled cameras and microphones without even looking over so one of us could even ask if he had any comments?

To his credit, Pitino hurled nary a barb, veiled or otherwise, toward Lexington or his arch rival, John Calipari, with whom a petty feud is turning virulent.

Of all the pre-season revelations of the past week, the most surprising is that the U of L vs. Butler game is going to be televised only online at espn3.com.

Why wouldn’t Butler, two time national runner up, demand more? Why wouldn’t ESPN think this worthy of one of its real networks, even if it had to move the game?

* * * * *

I am advised that, for all the talk from U of L officials which would appear to support staying in the Big East, the school has been feverishly lobbying any and all Big 12 power brokers for an invite. I have been told by two separate sources that Pitino, despite his public proclamations otherwise, has been one of the lobbyists.

As is par for the course at these annual love ins, The Rick was glib and entertaining, making the usual jokes about various players lack of defensive prowess. He said nothing noteworthy.

I did find it surprising that, during introductions, he acknowledged his son Richard, but did not mention at all any of the other assistants, Wyking Jones, Kevin Keatts or Mark Lieberman.

Finally, I want to commend the staff of the Downtown Marriott, where U of L held its hoops luncheon a day after UK held their Jefferson County affair in the same banquet room.

I walked to the spot where Matt Jones held forth as the emcee of the UK luncheon. There was no lingering odor. So props to the Marriott maintenance and cleaning staff for an exemplary job.

Who Dey? Wyking Jones, Kevin Keatts or Mark Lieberman and Richard Pitino.

Not quite Scott Davenport, Vince Taylor , et.al of the only Final 4 run.

One man’s opinion of one of the weaknesses of recent Cardinal basketball is the assistant coaches.

Matt Jones needs a well deserved ass kicking.
That guy is the very definition of a Douche Bag.

He certainly takes the already virulent UK/U of L smacktalk and kicks it up a notch.

Did anyone else notice that the Sports page of this morning’s CJ was label “Features”?

I came within a pubic hair of calling those idiots when I noticed that it was the sports page! They are real beauties down there.

Assistant coaches today are hired for the most part for their recruiting ability. The Final Four team referenced was a strange one in that it didn’t feature any five star kids and no four star ones either. Honestly I am not sure about three stars.

Honestly the success of that team wasn’t based on great recruiting.
