Actually the title misrepresents the situation. U of L’s student athletes are proving themselves worthy of that student athlete designation.
And I’ll continue even though my pal David is right, I really could care less what kind of grades college athletes get, as long as they’re eligible. Whether they wish to take advantage of the opportunity presented by a free scholly is their choice. (Unless, of course, your name is Kyle Kuric. But I digress.)
But, hey, if I can work a Chuck Berry lyric in somewhere I’m going to do it. Even if it doesn’t exactly fits. So I did.
Here’s the deal.
The Big East hands out Academic Excellence Awards to the school in each sport that has the best GPA for the academic year.
U of L won two of them for last year. The women’s lacrosse team.
And the men’s basketball team, which had 7 players with better than a 3.0 for the spring semester.
Which doesn’t exactly offset two first round NCAA losses in a row, but is worthy and a matter of legit pride.
