Louisville Card File: Notre Dame

Don’t know that there’s lots to say about the L last night to the Irish.

Had the game ended in a regulation on, say, a last second shot by Notre Dame, it would have disappointing. But not as deflating, I don’t think.

As it played out, it was a coulda, woulda, perhaps even shoulda situation for Louisville. Four point lead with under 3:00 to play. Second chance to win in regulation with the ball out of bounds at :25.6.

But it seems as if Lady Luck’s Big East emissary somehow ended up at Rutgers, helping it best Nova on a four-point play with less than a second to go. Instead of heading to the Cardinals’ aid in South Bend they way the Good Lord meant for it to be. It happens.

Not gonna pick nits on this performance. Sure there was stuff this Card squad could have done better, individually and as a team.

But it was a February conference game on the road against an experienced, well-coached, legit Top 15 foe. A W would have been nice. A moral victory, it was not. It happens.

Taunt or no taunt?

While the T against Kyle Kuric at the end of the first half was a sketchy call, I don’t think it was totally off the charts unreasonable.

Frankly, I thought KK was flexing a bit, in his own unassuming way. And, if in the long run, it makes him a more aggressive player, it was a small price to pay.

I’m not buying that those two points were the ones that lost the game. There were 20 more minutes of action between then and the OT. The Cards wasted three possesions in a row before a timeout at 60 all. Then took an awful trey out of the timeout. And that’s but one of example of a segment when U of L might have been more resolute.

I’m not complaining. Just sad as I always am when my team loses. It happens.

Love the news on the NCAA tournament TV situation.

Essentially every game is going to be available in its entirety on CBS, TBS, TNT or TruTV, all of which are available on Insight. We’re gonna get Ernie, Kenny Smith and Sir Charles in the studio. Sweet. And, since it’s not on ESPN, NOOOOOOOOO Dickie V or Digger. Sweeter.

Only TruTV is not currently available in HD. I emailed and asked Insight yesterday what new HD channels they’ll be installing and when? The cable provider has been heralding new HD for months now with no specifics. As a sports nut, I’m hoping the new ones will include TruTV, Versus and CBS College.

When I know, you’ll know.

I trust you’ve noticed that the ESPN guys working games with Bobby Knight have now taken to wearing sweaters instead of a coat and tie. Not sure what to make of it?

Find it somewhat discomforting that Digger Phelps was doing a Notre Dame game. I’m not one of those guys who thinks the announcers are biased against teams, even my fave. (Okay, maybe Doug Gottleib never has a nice word for U of L.) And I don’t fault Phelps for being an Irish homer. Hell, he coached there for heavens’ sake. But he shouldn’t be announcing their games.

Actually he shouldn’t be announcing any games. Nor even be in the studio. He is perhaps the most syntactically inarticulate and inane talking head in TV sports.

Let’s face it. The Cards had the game on the proverbial silver platter. Our ball, tied score, shot clock off, 23 ticks to go. But ND switched their D at the last minute and we didn’t adjust. I knew we were done when it went to OT. Lady Luck or, in the case of the Domers, the Good Lord only gives you so many chances.
The T on Kuric was absolutely outrageous. He came down, he looked at the guy who was at his feet, he said nothing, he didn’t chest bump anyone, he didn’t scream. He looked down and ran off. He didn’t even change his facial expression. I see worse than that just about every night. It was a terrible, terrible call that is absolutely indefensible.
And why WAS Digger calling that game? I cannot ever remember an ex-coach of a school calling that school’s games. He even referred to “our basket” at one point. He kept insisting that the technical got into Kuric’s head. What happened is ND decided to GUARD him in the second half. How tiresome.

In trying to determine where we might be able to find four more wins to get us to 11, I counted the game at Rutgers as one of the wins. After their recent win at home versus Villanova, I’m not as confident.

Anyone besides me notice that in the last two minutes of reg and the first three of OT KK not only didn’t get a shot, he hardly got to touch the ball. When a guy is having a career night GET HIM THE DAMNED BALL!

Like Bobby Pinocchio says “Feed the studs.”

I was listening to the Lach-ness-monster last night on 84HAS (don’t tell my fellow UL fans) and he just ripped the Kuric call and tore The General and Digger a new one all night! I loved it
