2:40 pm. Having watched the U of L women’s team meltdown last night at the Yum!, I’m aware just how different their crowd is from those who watch the men’s team. Neither of which is the same as those who attend pigskin battles at Papa J’s.
The most unique contingent will probably be the gathering later this afternoon for the acolytes, waiting to hang on every Charlie Strong word about this year’s exemplary recruiting class. They’ll be in full red and black regalia, and more than a few will be attired in the garb of jayvee football coaches. Yes, whistles ar0und the neck included.
Here, in the recruiting lounge at the Schnelly Complex, media guys and the inner inner circle will get the first reports first hand from Strong.
2:44 p.m. Jody Demling, C-J recruiting guru joins the assembled. He’s immediately given grief because his paper chose today to launch a revamped website, which is up and running one minute. Down the next.
He immediately turned to a couple of the U of L administrative folks, advising, “You’ll be sad about this. UK’s lost two tight ends in the last hour.” One, Jon Davis, was strongly considering U of L, but was swayed by that Louisville connection in Champaign-Urbana.
Some things just don’t change. Blue beats Red. Red beats Blue. Sometime they both lose. So it goes.
2:49 p.m. Football SID Rocco Gasparro has handed out the list of Louisville signees. Five are already enrolled. Fifteen more have signed their LOI.
The one all the pundits are asking about is the name not on the list. DeMarcus Smith, the Seneca QB, who was Charlie Strong’s first commit. Uh, not so fast. Seems that Central Florida has entered the photo.
Smith says he’ll announce on Friday. Word is his high school coaches don’t even know what’s going on? Of course, Smith isn’t enrolled anymore.
Were I a betting man — and my close and personal friend, Joey the Vig, can assure you I will never be confused as such — I’d say Smith has been scared off by Teddy Bridgewater, who is one recruit already enrolled at Louisville and will be able to participate in spring practice.
Coming up in a few minutes: Charlie Strong.
