Hump Day Sports Blather

Here’s one thing you don’t ever have to worry about hearing here: A discouraging word about Jeanine Edwards.

Joining Ron Franklin and Billy Clyde Gillispie in the trash heap is not one of my New Year’s resolutions.

By the by, has Gillispie, not so long ago one of the sure thing future superstars of college hoops, fallen off the radar or what?

Hear me now and believe me later.

I have taken my name out of the hat for the Pitt football coaching position.

Which means that I — nor anybody else apparently — shall be coaching them in Birmingham against UK this weekend.

A reliable source advises that Brett Favre and Jeanine Edwards, wearing a fitted Jets jersey, were spotted together last night at a chi chi NY disco.

But you didn’t hear it from me.

Terrelle & The Tattoos held on for a victory in the Superdome Bowl last night.

Or so I’m told.

For whatever reason, I’ve been falling asleep and haven’t seen the end of a bowl game since the Cards outlasted Southern Miss in the Beef O’Brady’s Commercial Bowl.

Actually I watched the whole game when Syracuse played Who Was It in the Pinstripe Bowl. Not very well played, but it sure was back and forth with a lot of offense. Kansas State, that’s right, that’s whom the Orange played.

I better get in shape. I do intend to watch my Quack battle Cameron & the Contracts for the “National Championship” which I think is being contested as an ESPN double header with the Yanks and Red Sox on Opening Day. Opening kickoff coincides with my usual bedtime.

Go Ducks!

Poor Bill Stone.

The local sports fan who looooooooves to bellow against everything Donkey, had one other favorite whipping boy.

Now that his alma mammy Michigan has deep sixed Rich Rod, Stone — Not a Michigan man, don’t you understand — will need to find a new target.

As part of the post game bile after UK’s resounding W over U of L, there’s been plenty of he say she say about all the blue fans in the good seats by the court.

What is incorrect is that U of L needs Kentucky fans to buy those seats so they can fill the arena. That’s absolutely incorrect. Cardinal fans have been way more supportive and resilient than I’d ever believe. Paying lots of money for seats as far away as Jeff Boat. Ah, but next year might be a different story. I’m hearing a lot of disgruntlement and comments like, “Ya know, watching on HD and not having to hassle with parking is . . . “

And, let me reiterate, U of L has nobody to blame but themselves for all that blue in the really good courtside seats. The university made a decision to exact as much money as possible for those cherished spots, casting aside long time faithful fans to sell them to corporations and others whose allegiance isn’t as solid. There is now empirical evidence that many of those folks turn them over to Cats fans for the big game. Shame on the fans who sell them to the enemy. Shame on the school for its abject money grab.

Feh. I’m even tired of hearing myself on this rant.

This just in.

A source within the U of L basketball program advises that there have been no new injuries today.

So far.

Okay, that’s a joke. There is no such creature as “a source within the U of L basketball program.” And, it’s unfathomable that the Cards could go a day without an injury.

Question of the Day: Would you coach the Oakland Raiders under Al Davis?

As a season ticket holder for over 30 years, I used to get upset with those selling tickets to Blue fans. With the economy, not knowing other’s financial stresses, and the money grubbing from Floyd St., I no longer pass judgment.
I really thought their presence was a big nonfactor last Friday. It was all about a current talent disparity! Let’s hope that will change very soon, like next 2 years.
