Tourney Tidbits: 50 Hours Til Tipoff

One of the traditionally heated arguments annually in these glorious days between Selection Sunday and Thursday noon is which of the four regions is the toughest?

To the amazement of all, it is not to be this year.

There is not only a consensus, but it is unanimous. The Midwest Region featuring overall #1 seed Kansas is far and away the most packed. Championship programs and coaches. Future high draft picks. Conference and tourney champions.

It’s stunning actually. It bolsters my theory espoused yesterday and now repeated. I believe that after several days in that artificially lit room with recycled air, eating bad pizza and drinking too many Red Bulls and bad coffee, the selection committee starts to lose their abilities to focus and think cogently. The selection show’s deadline starts drawing close and they start just filling in spots to get it ready in time.

That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. (Though I do advise I am putting it to rest for the rest of this tournament season, so you want have to read it again. Until next year at this time.)

All that said, the Rock Chalk Jayhawks should prevail and make it to Indy. Unless they get blindsided by Tom Izzo, who did it to Louisville last year, Sweatin’ Gary Williams, Mr. Personality John Thompson III, better than you think Paul Hewitt or Thad Matta.

Of course, the mention of Matta allows me to brag about my boffo Hoopeston Area Cornjerkers t-shirt that I donned just this past weekend. That’s where Matta went to high school. It’s a great nickname, folks. The logo is way funky too, as you might surmise.

For some reason which I fail to fathom, there are people in other parts of the country who actually want to see my bracket. Silly, silly folks, they. I’ve never come close to winning one of these things. My biases, prejudices, need to be quirky, and general unwillingness to study the actual factors that might help me make more reasoned decisions all work against me.

I’ve already filled out two off the charts brackets at two of the national sports websites. Some of my upsets will occur. Some won’t. Only if Jupiter is aligned with Mars will the correct ones fall on the same ballot.

That caveat notwithstanding, here are some random thoughts. I think Tubby’s Golden Gophers are good enough to blindside Xavier. UTEP’s long winning streak was impressive, but I can’t feel good about a team featuring Derrick (Or is it Derek?) Caracter. He still plays way lazy. And Butler is good.

One of these years, Murray State is going to win one. And Vandy is just inconsistent enough to be the team they finally conquer in the first round. Washington over Marquette is a fashionable upset choice. The Huskies better hope the game isn’t close. In which case, the Golden Eagles are a lock.

I like Mike Anderson’s balls out style of play to continue Clemson’s tourney calamities.

Siena/ Purdue is the most intriguing game in the first round. I haven’t a clue.

Everybody loves Cornell. It’s one of them academic schools, you know. But their biggest wins are over Vermont, Princeton and Harvard. Riddle me, why the excitement? A close L to Kansas? I need more than that.

I’ll ask this one more time: You think E5 Earl Clark would rather be preparing to meet Cal in Jacksonville as a Louisville Cardinal, or jumping a bus for his next tilt with the Iowa Energy of the NBA Developmental League?

I know my pet theory above all others this time of year is: You Only Play Who You Play, but . . .

. . . if I was Kentucky, I’d be worried about having to face either Wisconsin or West Virginia. The former is experience and deceptively well coached by under appreciated Bo Ryan. The latter is Bobby Huggs tough and experienced and hungry.

Why is that The Rick never lets an opportunity pass when he can extol the virtues of Edgar Sosa and what a great point guard he’s been this year? Last night on his radio show, he implied that there’s no way Peyton Siva will be able to replace Sosa. Am I missing something here?

I don’t think you’re missing anything re Edgar Sosa except that the season is not over and Rick needs to prop up the spirits of his starting point guard. Rick uses the press as a motivational tool. Go Edgar!
E5? Well, he gets $1.47 very big ones this year and $1.58 more next year. He can buy himself some really great headphones for the bus ride. Plus, the way Phoenix uses the D League, he’ll be back with the Suns in a few weeks. Go Cornell! Beware Tom Izzo and beware Texas. And was it true that Christian Laettner was on the selection committee?
