Thursday’s Third Degree: Whither Marra, West is Finally Won & Much More

I got questions . . . and some answers:

1 – Mike Marra absolutely was the hero of Louisville’s biggest W of the year at Syracuse. Since then it’s been all pine time and no playing time — as in, nary a nanosecond on the court. I don’t understand. Ricky, you got some ‘splainin’ to do????

2 – Jerry West, the Logo himself, unarguably one of the 20 greatest basketballers of all-time, was just yesterday named to the National College Hoops Hall of Fame. Really now, what took them so long? He graduated from West Virginia four decades ago. I don’t understand.

3 – I’m a hockey fan, but, frankly, not totally familiar of all nuances of the incredible sport. Watching Olympic hockey, I’m struck by how many fewer icing calls there are and how many fewer faceoffs there are, compared to a typical NHL game. Just coincidence, or are there some different rules? Anybody out there know the answer? It’s also great that, given that it’s the Olympics, there aren’t any fights.

4 – The Film Babe said she had to keep answering questions at the U of L/ Georgetown game about why I was wearing a FC Barcelona jersey? Correct answers: 1. Because I could. 2. My favorite team in futbol, the reigning champs, had secured a tie that day in Stuttgart in the opening round of the Champions League tournament. I’d go into the specifics of why a tie in an away game is not such a bad thing, but my guess is you could give a shit, so I’ll move on. If you want the skinny, write me and I’ll explain.

5 – The time is drawing nigh to actually start paying attention to the NBA, right? As soon as we get through a little thing I like to call March Madness.

6 – Isn’t it time the NCAA finally hammered Southern Cal? What are they waiting for?

7 – Is there a new sheriff in town, or what? Or what! Every story I hear about Charlie Strong makes me smile. Working players so hard in the weight room they throw up. Showing up randomly at classes to make sure the guys are attending. Telling them to sit in the front row, so he doesn’t have to disrupt the professors. Recruiting his butt off. Showing up in the office at 4:00 a.m.

8 – Is my man Jeff Gordon over the hill?

9 – What are the odds that Born Ready Lance Stephenson will actually stay for a second season in Cincy as he’s threatening? Is is possible this kid would actually show sense for the first time?

10 – Anybody out there pumped for the beginning of the big Australia vs. New Zealand Twenty-20 match tomorrow in Wellington? That would be, uh, cricket, for the uninformed.

11 – Exactly when and — for heavens’ sakes — why did NFL become a year round sport?

    1. He will never explain and we will never understand.
    2. Absurd.
    3. Perhaps in the Olympics its a sport while the NHL is entertainment (see college b-ball and the NBA).
    4. This country doesn’t care.
    5. Wait til late May,
    6. USC seems to have 17 get out of jail free cards.
    7. Go Cards.
    8. They have hills on NASCAR tracks?
    9. Anything can happen with maturity. Check Ellis’s first season under Pitino.
    10. Huh???
    11. When it decided it could be.

That’s what I like. A loyal reader willing to meet even the most absurd of challenges, by answering every question. Obviously a slow day at the office.

I have one question for you… Are you going to make it to Knight Hall on Sunday to watch the Knights potentially clinch their first ever back-to-back 20 win seasons/secure a tournament bid???

As I told Joe, the Bellarmine game unfortunately conflicts with U of L vs. UConn. Got to go with my first love.

I hear ya and really do appreciate your coverage of the Bellarmine five. You were doing it before the C-J hopped on the bandwagon.
