Sunday Snippets: Cats Fans Crowing, Cards Fans Cowering, Snow In The Forecast

There was a time and such a time it was.

On a Sunday when Louisville had a nooner (more or less), we’d don our red apparel, gather with friends, brunch, talk over the game plan and get ready to root for the Cards. Today we’re checking the movie schedules, wondering whether U of L will be out of it early enough in the 1:00 game against the ‘Cuse to make a 2:35 showtime?

Sigh.

On paper this seemed like a season that could be savored. Legit experience coming back. Some youngsters with decent talent to develop. Making it to the second weekend of the Dance appeared doable, a reasonable and satisfactory goal.

Instead Cardinal faithful are wondering if the NIT is worth it. Does U of L really want a game against a third tier WAC team to be the Freedom Hall finale? Wondering, given the stoic bench personality of Ralph Willard, if he’s hurt or helped the team? (Not having a clue of course what value he has been during practice and individual instruction? Is Samardo’s jump hook a Willard add on?????) And making conjecture who the Cards next coach is going to be?

Or, simply shaking their heads at Louisville’s stupefying mediocrity.

Would a surprise victory today in the Home of the Dome Ranger right this not so slowly sinking ship?

I, for one, am just not sure.

Meanwhile the biggest news up the road are those new unis. Which are as exciting as new box of Kleenex. Except for Cousins’ personalized headband worn during warm ups.

Actually the fans are way concerned about DeMarcus’ free throw shooting. And Dickie V’s constant mentions of The Rick during the Tennessee game telecast. And how good the new recruit from Turkey is? And how special the season would really be, if UK just hadn’t blown it at South Carolina?

Truth is, in the World o’ College Hoops, nothin’ could be finer these days than being a UK Wildcat fan.

While I’m probably just stating the obvious, the number of legit national title contendas has whittled down to a trio.

Kansas, Kentucky and Syracuse. In that order.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk has been mighty impressive on the road in the tough Big 12. Despite Kentucky’s transcendent talent, there’s something that tells me youthful inexperience will raise its ugly head at some point late in its tourney run. (I can’t shake the image of Chris Weber calling that timeout he didn’t have, after walking with the ball, which wasn’t called.) And I’ll know more about the Orange, after watching what they do against U of L this afternoon.

Watch out for Kansas State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Villanova, maybe Butler and perhaps Brigham Young. If Texas revives itself, It will be the season’s double McGuffin.

Has Danica Patrick been getting an inordinate amount of pub, or what?

* * * * *

If the weather doesn’t change for the better in Vancouver, maybe they can move the downhill to Paoli Peaks? We got 5″ to 7″ of fresh powder on the way.

Other than tuning in to see one crowd shot, will any of you actually watch the NBA all-star game?

I’d love to see a comeback all the way to the top season for my man Jeff Gordon. Starting today at Daytona.

Four weeks to Selection Sunday.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

you think danica gets too much pub now? try being an open wheel racing fan, or rather what open wheel racing used to be which is not the indy racing league version.

for YEARS at the top of the telecast, the race announcers would ask “IS THIS THE RACE DANICA WINS HER FIRST??????” despite being on a second tier team and being a rather fourth rate driver. lyn st. james could bend danica over, beat her about with a tire iron and tell danica to thank her for even doing that. danica patrick is all hype and no show. the fact that she won her only race under suspicious circumstances, in japan (in other words the middle of the night in the states), and before the last race ever for the rival champcar world series stealing away that thunder, and we have seen and heard nothing about her and from her (well, in a positive sense. she ain’t called princess sparkle pony by those in the paddock by accident) since then only in my mind confirms my observations.
