Perhaps you noticed the gaggle of cameras and media types on the edge of the court before U of L’s tipoff against Radford. Tom Jurich was updating scribes on Urban Meyer fallout and how it might affect the Cardinals. Was Charlie Strong a prime candidate? Did he know anything? Etc, etc.
TJ put on a brave face. It was obvious that he was a worried man singing a worried song.
But he won’t be worried long.
At least for the time being.
The buzz along press row midgame was that Florida’s head coach was having second thoughts, that he would take up his AD’s suggestion: Take a year off. Evaluate the situation with the goal of returning to the sidelines for 2011 season. You know, like dressing up as Billy Donovan on Halloween.
The Cardinal Community can breathe a sigh of relief. For now.
One guy’s take is that it could come back to kick U of L’s ass in the long run. My sense is that Charlie Strong was a long shot to get the job this year, probably a third, fourth or fifth choice.
But what if this happens? Interim Gator coach Steve Adazzio proves deserving of the “interim” label. Florida loses, say, 4 or 5 next season. And Meyer realizes during his year off that it would be in his best interests to continue his retirement from coaching. And, say, Charlie Strong proves to be all that for U of L, winning 7, 8 or 9 next season. It’s doubtful but stranger things have happened.
So a year from now, Florida is back in the market for a new coach. How far up the wish list would successful head coach Charlie Strong move?
But, hey, that’s all projection. For now, Strong at Louisville is secure.
