Cardinal Tip Off Luncheon Report

As these annual affairs go, U of L’s sold out basketball luncheon was no more and no less illuminating than usual. These are usually love fests, celebrations by the faithful that the best time of the sports year is about to begin yet again.

Louisville fans, like UK believers yesterday at the Coach Cal Dog & Pony Show, were looking for little insight (✔), some hope (✔), a recruiting hint or two (✔) and reassurance that the Cards are going to be contendas again (✔).

Observing Rick Pitino work his charismatic charm, given his off court travails, made it a more interesting event than usual. My guess is most of the 1100 Cardinal acolytes in attendance left sated. The Rick gave a little pep talk, and seemed to be pumping himself up as much as the fans and squad.

The most telling observations I can offer concern two point guards. Edgar Sosa’ brief remarks were funny and self-deprecating. Freshman Peyton Siva displayed maturity and presence beyond his years. Both are positive signs.

I’d love to offer more. But there really isn’t much. Pitino gave each of his players grief. He said all the right things about the city, the new arena and his bosses at the university.

Okay, there is one other thing. Women’s coach Jeff Walz spoke briefly before the headliner. He was funny and humble. His standing O was a few seconds longer than Pitino’s. Then again, he coached the national runners up, while the men’s season ended in the Elite 8.

Full time practice starts officially Friday a week.
