Moniker of the Day. Is there a more appropriately skewed nickname in sports than the Cincinnati Bungles? Talk about hard cheese. When it takes a miracle to beat the striped ones at Paul Brown Stadium, the miracle occurs.
Who Ya Got? Jay Cutler or Kyle Orton? Superstar whiner Cutler was 17-36 with a TD and — count ‘em — 4 picks. His QB rating was 43 and change. And, yes, his Bears lost to the Packers. Journeyman Orton went 17-28 with a TD and no interceptions for a healthy QB rating of 100.7. And his Broncos — What was the name of their last QB? — lucked out against Cincy.
Calling all the King’s Horses & all the King’s Men. Charlie “Humpty Dumpty” Weis had another great fall. The smug Notre Dame coach outfoxed himself Saturday in the Big House. Victory in hand, and needing to run clock, he got cute, kept calling pass plays. They fell incomplete, stopping the clock. Allowing beleaguered Rich Rod’s Wolverines to prevail. Awwwwwww!
Tough Trio of Toddlers. Michigan’s Tate Forcier led his team to a big win. Southern Cal’s Matt Barkely led the Trojans down the field with the clock winding down for a mighty W that quieted the O-H–I-O cheers. UCLA’s precocious Kevin Prince was error free in Knoxville, shutting up both Rock Top and Bigmouth Kiffin.
Who Ya Got, Round II? Serena Williams or that Charlyne Yi lookalike line judge who took down Williams with an awful call in the US Open semis? I say take Williams in a smackdown, Marquis of Queensbury rules, and give the points.
Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods.
Watching the Clock. I know football has just started, but, you know, it’s Hoopsylvania. 31 days until October 15.
As Seen on TV. I finally ordered a must have for any college football fan. An Official Lou Holtschz Shpit Shcreen Guard. I’m simply tired of mopping up the TV room after every halftime show.
Greatest Shot Ever? If you haven’t seen Roger Federer’s unbelievable return yesterday, you must. Check it out here.
Extinct Species. Colorado Buffaloes. And didn’t their coach used to be the Next Great Coach while at Boise State?
Saturday’s Game. I keep wanting to get this feeling that U of L will surprise at Commonwealth on Saturday. But, sigh, it hasn’t come yet. Those double digit point spreads being touted seem spot on to me.
