Coach Cal Shakes Up Staff

An eagle eyed reader has advised of some UK hoops staff changes observed by Cat fan Larry Vaught at his all things Big Blue web site.

John Calipari has hired Brandon Weems as a graduate assistant. Not sure exactly what his qualifications are, but he was a high school teammate of LeBron James, and is said to still be close to the NBA star.

But say sayonara to Bilal Batley, who came to UK with Coach Cal, after serving on his staff at Memphis State. He previously worked under Kelvin Sampson at both Oklahoma and IU.

Vaught’s post mentions a rumor that has been floating around about some national story — implied to be negative — about UK hoops that might be in the offing. I’ve heard some murmurs along those lines myself, but nothing more than that. So I haven’t mentioned it before.

Anyhow, Vaught, who knows way more about UK sports than I do, wonders if the Batley departure is in any way related to the “national story” gossip?

Frankly, I dunno.

It is a bit unusual that a fellow in Batley’s position would leave so soon after moving to Lexington as part of the new regime.

On the plus side for Cats basketball fans, at least one sports outlet thinks incoming point guard John Wall is the best of the best. Fox Sports has named Wall its pre-season Player of the Year. And he hasn’t suited up for a full team practice yet, let alone a game.

I guess that famous Wall dunk on YouTube was all FOX needed. Are there no worthy POY candidates anywhere in the nation who actually have played college basketball??
