Tom Watson: Yikes, It’s Yips not Yipes

So, yeah, we were all rooting for 59 year old Tom Watson to make that nine foot par putt on the 72d to win the British Open. (The Open, they call it, no adjective necessary.) Commentator Andy North said it was going to be in for the title.

Nope.

As every single one of us who ever attempted to play golf has done, he choked. A “no confidence” putt, exclaimed announcer Mike Tirico. Understatement.

Stewart Cink birdied the 72d a couple of groups ahead of Watson, survived an inquiry to see if he was going to be penalized a stroke for ball movement on a replacement situation, and made it to the four hole playoff.

Cink has never won a major, but has a couple of top tens.

Watson’s won this one five previous times.

My guess is it’s family, next door neighbors and his club pro only rooting for Cink. And it’s not because of the ugly lime green cap and shirt he’s wearing. We love the old farts givin’ it a go one last time, don’t we? So, Tommy Boy is our guy for the day.

Watson just bogeyed the first playoff hole. Cink hit a nine footer for par, so he’s up a stroke with three to play.

Watson’s got the look of a guy who has peaked for the day. I sure hope I’m wrong. But if I were a betting man, I’d say Cink’s the one who is going to be drinking from that claret jug tonight.
