Right Timing, Wrong Guy

Southern Cal has hired Kevin O’Neill as its next head basketball coach.

Which means my formerly reliable source in LA LA Land was correct that somebody would be hired by the weekend. But wrong as to who would be named. It happens.

Reggie Theus still be lookin’ for his next gig.

O’Neill was most recently the coach in waiting at Arizona. When Lute Olson returned the situation got more toxic and O’Neill was canned. O’Neill’s all-time record as a head coach is under .500. Does Mike Garrett know something the folks at Marquette, Northwestern, Tennessee and Toronto don’t? We’ll find out.

I suspect that Southerrn Cal got a good deal on O’Neill. Probably a lot less than Theus would have cost them.

Strange hire. My guess is USC knows the NCAA is going to hit them with major penalties and their program will be the pits for several years. O’Neill will babysit things until the penalties are about over. Then because of his losing record he will be fired without it costing USC too much and since the sanctions will be about to expire a better hire will be willing to come.
