First the pucks update. Detroit survived another power play, and the teams remain scoreless after one.
There is not a doubt in my mind that the Kobes shall win the NBA title. Even with the next three games in Orlando against a Magic squad that has proven resilient all post-season.
Had Orlands stolen Game Two, had former Hilltopper Courtney Lee not missed that game winning layup in the last game, then, well, then the underdogs might be more appealing as a play. But, nahhh, this one is over but for two more LA LA wins in a possible five games.
That said, Kobe, the series only dominating talent, can make mistakes. Like in Game Two, when he tried to score at the end of regulation while being triple teamed and Lamar Odom wide open under the hoop. Kobe’s shot was blocked. He was saved by Orlando’s failure to convert withh :06 on the clock. Which is to say that the Lakers are beatable. Unfortunately, Orlando without sparkplug Jameer Nelson at full strength hasn’t the wherewithal to complete the task.
Neither of these teams, whichever wins, shall stand among the league’s best ever. Both are relatively mediocre. Period.
One question the Film Babe asked at dinner was about Phil Jackson. If the Kobes win, will he legitimately stand up there with Red Auerbach? (Okay she didn’t actually ask that, but she did ask about Jackson, wondering if I hated him as much as I hate Kobe? No. I think he’s smug and more than a bit arrogant. But, you know, he’d be great to eat dinner with.)
My immediate reaction to the question Joanie didn’t ask, but I did, is: No. He’s won with Jordan and Pippen. He’s won with Kobe and Shaq. What if he hadn’t had such superstars? Would he have so many titles? Then I realized that Auerbach won with, ahem, Bill Russell. Who is only the best winner in the history of American professional sports.
So, yeah, maybe Phil stands up there with Red. And, if he wants to send me one, I’ll put a ball with his autograph on the shelf in my office right next to the one with Auerbach’s signature.
Pucks is about to start up again. Orlando and LA LA are about to tip it off.
Later.
