Truth is a lot of folks — myself included — are just now discovering this very gritty U of L baseball team. My guess is there were a lot of first timers in the stands last night, setting an attendance record. And more rookies tonight.
Speaking of rookies, let’s hear it for Cave City freshman Derek Self. He took the mound in the 7th and proceeded to mow down 9 Middle Tennessee batters in a row to perfectly insure a delicious U of L win.
The Cards tallied the tying run in the 8th. Then, for the second night in a row, benefited from an ill-timed miscue by their opponents. A throwing error by the Blue Raiders catcher, allowed the winning run to score from the 3d in top of the 9th.
Cards win 3-2. Tomorrow night they’ll play the survivor of the Vandy/ Middle Tennessee elimination game on Sunday afternoon. Louisville needs to win one more to make it to its second Super Regional in the last three seasons. It’s double elimination, so a loss tomorrow isn’t fatal.
Self is now 7-0 on the season, with a save against Villanova on May 1. His ERA is 3.48 in his 20 appearances, all in relief.
