Some Big Blue fans are already ordering their national championship t-shirts. They want to be the first one in their new finery down at the General Store.
Frankly, who can blame them? Nothing like a regime change, a #1 recruiting haul and one maybe two returning superstars to instigate visions of pre-ordination.
Many U of L fans are down in the dumps. Not only is arch rival all the rage in the world of college hoops, but matters seem out of sorts on the Belknap Campus. Coach is beleaguered. Some significant question marks remain for next season, after a really disappointing loss to end the last one.
I’ve already gotten a few emails today from despondent red & black faithful in the wake of the John Wall coup de grace. Some Cardinals fans are displaying utter stupidity in calling for a moratorium on UK games in Louisville. Give it up, you dumpkopfs, UK is the state university. Louisville is, to many’s surprise and many’s chagrin, part of the Commonwealth. It’s a big tent, folks.
And it’s not just the U of L/ UK thing.
Heads of Hoosier fans are spinning too. Tom Crean’s been doing a helluva job resurrecting that tradition. And doing it the Hoosier way, slow and steady. Yet in the wake of the Coach Cal maelstrom, IU’s road back seems too slow and circuitous.
Wilkommen to the Twitter Age of College Hoopdom. What have you done for me in the last hour? 140 characters only please, our attention span is limited.
You all know I’m a Cards fan. And here’s what I think. I think the UK resurgence is good for everybody. My team included. The Rick likes nothing better than a challenge. His boss, TJ, too.
The reality is this. Kentucky is going to be consistently good for the next few seasons. Consistently a national title contenda. Accept it, Cards and Hoosiers fans. Wear it with class, UK fans.
And remember, you still have to win those titles on the floor. U of L beat #2 UK in ‘59. They bested the world’s greatest recruiting class — to that time — in Knoxville in ‘83. Kentucky was highly ranked going into the ‘86 Dance. U of L won.
U of L was a Final Four lock this past season. They lost.
The Hoosiers had the greatest team ever put together in ‘75. Kentucky beat them in the regional final.
That’s how it works. The best players don’t always make the best team. (Uh, but the more good ballers you got, the better your chances.) The best team doesn’t always win.
So, everybody take a deep breath, kick back and enjoy the season(s) to come. Kentuckiana is back as the epicenter of college hoops.
Shut up, Tobacco Road, it’s not even close.
