Just Another May Thursday Night

Revised 5/16 3:40 p.m.

All I changed was the title. Because, uh, well, I realized that I originally said Tuesday night, but what I think I meant was Thursday night. I’m pretty sure. My memory lapses all too often. It’s Saturday afternoon now, and I can’t even remember what I ate for lunch just a few hours ago. Besides, Tuesday or Thursday, what’s the diff? But, following the orders of my editors, I’m striving for correctitude here.

Let’s see. My Detroit Red Wings playing their seventh Game Seven in the Stanley Cup playoffs at the Joe (That would be Joe Louis Arena for ye uninitiated) slip past the Mighty Ducks 4-3 (That’s seven goals total for ye arithmatically challenged) to move on to the Western Conference Finals against fellow Original Sixer Chicago Black Hawks.

Orlando showed some Magic by setting aside its team turmoil to jam past the Celtics to set up yet another NBA Game Seven this coming Sunday evening.

And Boston, yet another Original Six squad, is tied 2-2 with Carolina in its Game Seven as I write this with 3 and 1/2 minutes to play in regulation. If the score changes while I write, I’ll update it for you.

Detroit was ahead 3-1 in the second period. But feisty eighth seed Anaheim tallied late in the 2d and again in the 3d to tie it up. The Wings seemed to have tired legs down the stretch, but gutted it out. Henrik Zetterberg flipped the puck in front of the net from along the board, and plugger Dan Cleary nudged the biscuit underneath Jonas Hiller’s pads into the basket with 3:00 to play for the winning goal.

Sweet. (Yes, honey, there was an octopus tossed on the ice.)

Boston vs. Carolina Update: They’re going to OT.

Anyway, Detroit vs. Chicago. Stan Mikita vs. Gordie Howe. Bring it on.

In Orlando, Dwight Howard zipped his lips and showed his mettle. 23 points. 22 boards. No comments about his ever nervous coach, Stan the Van Van Gundy. The Green kinda folded as Orlando finished the game with a 11-2 run.

Meanwhile in the other NBA game, Houston inexplicably opened the game with a 16-1 run. That’s not a typo.

The Rockets lead 42-25 with 5:30 to play in the 2d quarter.

I don’t understand. But what could be finer than Koby Bryant joining Mark Cuban on the sidelines for the Western Finals? Okay, one thing would be if Mine That Bird won the Preakness.

Okay I’m going to watch the rest of these games in the bedroom. Which means I’ll probably find out if Boston and Houston prevail or not in the morning when I turn on the computer.

Playoff action in the middle of May. Life could be worse.
