Beware the Swarm

Cardinal fans have been looking for a nickname for this band of Cardinals. The Swarm — that’s my suggestion.

(Okay, truth be told, my buddy Ben came up with the name. So he gets the credit. By the by, he’s the sage who has always believed in the one game at a time rule: “You only play who you play.” It’s mandatory to remember that this time of year.)

Louisville’s defense has proven to be the defining trait of this team.

Down eight at the half for the second night in a row, this time 30-38, it didn’t take very long for U of L to carpe diem. In less than three minutes, the score was knotted at 41. The red & black outscored the tiring Orange 21-5 to start the second half. Ball game.

Who was it that mentioned spurtability and snap, crackle and pop? Oh yeah, yours truly.

Louisville is a team that can look really out of sync at times. The Cards throw it away, drive into traffic, often take hurried shots too early in the clock, are not a great rebounding team, but . . .

. . . other than its stalwart defense, U of L’s greatest ability is its guile to overcome those defects when necessary.

Rick Pitino has reaffirmed that he’s as good a coach as there is these days in college hoops.

I’d love to be more scientific at this time, more incisive in my observations, provide a more empirical breakdown. Can’t do it. Too excited. Tomorrow perhaps.

Louisville is what Jay Bilas proclaimed it in the post game analysis — the Best Team in the Big East. Which happens to be the best conference in the history of college hoops. U of L went 19-2 against league foes. Most excellent.

Let’s Dance!!!!!

(Side Note: Syracuse’s Jonny Flynn deserved the MVP trophy. His acceptance interview was as classy as I’ve ever heard.)

I used to think that Flynn was a ball hog and a hot dog. After watching the BE tourney, I have changed my mind. He is a really good player who makes everyone else on his team a better player. He truely deserved the MVP.

I’ll be pulling for the Orange(men) in the big dance. I just hope they aren’t placed in the same bracket with the Cards.
