Planting Seeds

So my buddy Ben — a fellow determined to consider all the Bracketological permutations — thinks the Cards should be a lock for a 1 seed, now that Kansas, Oklahoma, Pitt and UConn lost Thursday in conference quarter-finals.

Frankly, as I’ve said, I don’t care what they’re seeded. I’d rather have a Dayton to Indy to Detroit path in the Dance, regardless of seeding. Of course, you gotta win ‘em. Right? Villanova is who U of L plays next and I’m a mighty mighty worried fan.

Besides, who really knows what those guys in that committee room are thinking? Or how they’re able to focus after days of cold pizza, chocolate chip cookies, bad coffee, stale hotel air and little sleep? Besides, if Duke wins the ACC don’t the Blue Devils, according to NCAA regs, immediately go to the head of the class?

I’m also wondering where they’d put UK, should the Cats run the table in the SEC tourney? I dunno know why, but I’ve got a feeling about the Big Blue.

Who wants to weigh in?

it depends on which argument the committee is going to follow:

should it be the “body of work” arguement that the talking heads like jason whitlock, doug gotleib and jay “don’t call me jason” williams (and the latter two work for espn so we KNOW they know what they’re talking about), then western ky (tourney team), minnesota, unlv (likely tourney teams), and notre dame (rpi top 100) will keep cardinal nation out of the top lines. three were out of conference losses and one was a bad loss in conference.

should it be the “what-have-you-done-for-me-lately” arguement, then winning the big east regular season free and clear, possibly winning the big east tournament, and going 8-1 on the road in conference should get cardinal nation preferred location throughout the tournament as the second 1 seed, that being dayton-indy. oklahoma, kansas, pitt, and uconn all LOST their opening games in their respective conference tourneys which happened to be the quarters. oklahoma lost two games WITH their superstar in the game. uconn lost one of their keys for the year. that alone should drop them from number 1 lock consideration. kansas won their regular season title and called it a regular season ’til big dance time. they should be barred from 1 consideration altogether.

what this does is open the door for michigan state to get a 1 seed as well as give the tourney committee an excuse to grant memphis state an undeserved 1 seed as well.

my concern coming into conference tourney time was that if the big east seeding held, then louisville would get a deserved 1 seed, but get shipped out west with carolina in the south, uconn in the midwest and pitt in the east. but since uconn and pitt so graciously lost their first games, louisville moves up from possibly being the fourth 1 and getting a shafted location to being at least the third and a better location (memphis) to the second with a virtual lock on the top midwest team.

the only way cardinal nation is considered being the overall 1 seed is if carolina lost today and louisville won the big east tournament. but here is an absolute fact: if louisville wins the big east tournament, they will be a 1 seed, period, end of story.

Why do sports commentators and fans have to do that “_____ Nation” thing. Man, that’s annoying.
