Black (and Blue) Friday the 13th

For good luck, Kentucky wore black unis in their SEC tourney quarter final tilt against LSU.

The gimmick didn’t work.

Kentucky 58, LSU 67.

The Baron Adolph Rupp is surely turning over in his grave. “Now if those boys think wearing uniforms colored black are going to help them win, that’s just foolish. They just don’t know what they are talking about. The Kentucky Wildcats wear blue.”

What is so sad about UK’s fifth loss in its last six games is that the Bayou Bengals are probably the worst conference champ I’ve seen in years. Talented. Certainly better than when that yahoo John Brady coached. But a lot of standing about and a lot of one on one. Eminently beatable.

UK is simply stated not a very good basketball team. And that’s being gentle.

The Cats never led, continued to throw it away unforced, were disheveled at the offensive end and Jodie Meeks was held to eight.

As the game ground down to its inevitable conclusion, telecasters Keith Hammond and Larry Conley, both UK grads, became increasingly deflated. They bemoaned the zebras, and spoke openly of the turmoil surrounding their beloved Wildcats. Truth is, if this team had half the heart that Conley had when he played, they’d be dancing next week.

Instead they’ll be hosting an NIT tilt in historic Memorial Coliseum. The reader who comes closest to guessing attendance for the opener wins a LEO ballcap. Or some other token I can come up with. Price is Right rules apply: Best guess without going over actual attendance, wins.

As for Billy Clyde, I’m advised he will not be terminated by Mitch Barnhart and Lee Todd. I’m also advised he may choose to move on, though that is unlikely. The guy’s a piece of work. Tom Leach just announced that Gillispie probably won’t show for his post-game interview on the Big Blue Network. Classy fella, that one.

Wherever UK plays their NIT game, likely Memorial Col- it will sell out. However many seats are there: that’s how many people will be there. They might stink, but they are still UK.

Indeed. Which is not to mention that playing in the House that Rupp Built would be pretty nifty.

I say this as a fan of UK as well: 6,497, tops, in Memorial Coliseum for some hot NIT action (it’s actually kind of cool that they’ll be playing a game there).
