A Spartan in Cotton Country?

I’m tellin’ ya, kids, if you want rumors about sports — especially if football is in anyway involved at all — the place to look is way down south in the Land o’ Cotton where good times are not forgotten.

There’s an article in the newpaper of Columbus, Georgia, of all places, about the next Alabama basketball coach. As dumbfounding as that is, think about this: the article appeared during Spring Football season. Talk about your blasphemy. This is heresy of the highest order. Especially when it’s about a rival.

Folks get lynched for a loss of focus like that.

Anyway, according the piece, Crimson Tide football mentor Nick Saban is a major player in the search for the school’s new hoops coach. Nevermind that he vehemently denies it. Or that Saban has always seemed like the kind of guy who thinks about nothing except his football team. (The sole exception might be his obsession with his next job which would pay him more than the current one.)

The gossip among the Bama faithful is that Saban might be able to deliver his old Michigan State cronie Tom Izzo. While it’s hard to conceive that the Spartan coach would leave East Lansing where he’s da man, the bottom line 99% of the time is this: Money talks. Actually money doesn’t talk, it swears.

As for that reporter who chose to write about hoops during spring football season instead of those UGA Bulldog pigskinners, well, look for him in the unemployment line.

They will probably demote an assistant football coach.
