Knights Nab a Deuce

Scotty Davenport’s 24-6 Bellarmine Knights dropped the GLVC tourney final to Northern Kentucky. Bummer.

But it is of little consequence now. The Knight hoopsters will be dancing this weekend in Findlay, Ohio. And have obviously impressed the NCAA selection committee, since they got a higher seeding than the team that beat them this weekend as well as other conference rivals, Southern Indiana, Rockhurst and Kentucky Wesleyan.

(Hope the Knights don’t get bamboozled like my dad and I did once in Findlay. It was by our account a speed trap back in the day. Cop stopped us on the interstate and drove us right to the judge’s house, where we were afforded “speedy” justice. We paid on the spot and got out of Dodge before they required additional exaction.)

The regional, one of eight, is almost a replay of the GLVC tournament. Host Findlay, Grand Valley State and Lake Superior State are the interlopers who will be joining the GLVC powers.

The second-seeded Knights play Kentucky Wesleyan. The winner plays the survivor of Northern Kentucky vs. Lake Superior State.

I stand by my statement that Davenport’s charges run the motion offense with more exactitude than any other team I’ve seen this year, regardless of division. Let’s hope the Knights can git er done. A trip to Division II’s Elite Eight would be sweet, and eminently doable for this most able team.

Maybe the Knight mascot — hands down, college hoopdom’s ugliest — will scare Bellarmine’s foes into submission.

As the great Ed McMahon used to say to Johnny, “You are correct, sir!” The Bellarmine cagers move and pass and execute in general like nobody’s business, hustle 99.999% of the time, and are a blast to watch. Catching a game at Knights Hall is very fun and one of the best kept secrets in Kentucky sports.

Go Knights and bring home a D-II title banner!

Tough road to hoe for the Knights as they will have to beat GLVC teams for the second or third time that are intimately familiar with them, not to mention the home team or So Ind. in the final. Much more difficult than the way D-1 does it.
However, they and come to play every night, not to compare them to some teams around here that just mail it in.
The mascot is an acquired taste.
    Go Knights!

Good breakdown by Bob. I had my doubts about Sunday as Bellarmine had already beaten NKU twice. Hopefully they’ll meet again and the preferred outcome will happen! Do not want to have to try to beat USI a third time, though.

In any event, the Knights are back, baby. And look to reload, despite the loss of the best point guard in Kentucky - Chartrael Hall, based on who I hear they’re recruiting.
