Better Late Than Never

A few thoughts about that U of L game the other night. You know, the win over Seton Hall. (Sorry, so compelling has been the melodrama in Lexington, I simply forgot to weigh in with my not so perceptive observations on the Cards.)

With 6:13 to play, Jerry Smith, for the first time I can remember, nailed a three off the dribble. Sweet. If he can do that every once in awhile, it’s yet another proverbial weapon in the Cardinal arsenal.

Despite the career game he posted, E5’s passing still sucks. No gentler way to say it. Note that he no longer is the primary inbounder.

The turn around in Terrence Jenning’s free throw shooting is astounding. I simply cannot recall another player improving so much during a season as he has. Good work, dude. Of course, the antedote is ‘Mardo. Samuels percentage is falling like the Dow.

And, while Louisville is hitting on just about all cylinders, free throw shooting remains its Achilles heel. National champions — that’s the goal, right? — hit better than 64% from the charity stripe. The Rick can spin it anyway he wants to the press and public, you know and I know that he knows it’s a problem. Most recent empirical evidence: Last season’s erstwhile national champion Memphis State Tigers.

Senior Night always brings melancholia. Blink, the regular season is over. The guys we’ve grown accustomed to in red and black soon become “I remember Andre McGee, that little fella could play some D.” My favorite of these nights remains Wes Unseld’s finale. Fans would have stood and clapped all night. Literally. They had a big cake for the assembled. People gathered on the floor. It was sweet.

One general thought: Is it my imagination or have we seen less of Tim Higgins, Jim Burr and Dick Vitale this season?
