I got to Dan Wetzel’s most excellent expose of the whole Bowl Game boondoggle through an article by King Kaufman at salon.com. Which I mention for attribution purposes only. But it is a topic on everybody’s mind this time of year, when football fans look at each other and wonder why there isn’t a college playoff akin to the revered NCAA hoops tourney?
Read the article and you’ll get the point.
All that said, I’ve got a premonition. Hear me now, believe me later. But, most important, remember where you read it first. ESPN, now undoubtedly the most powerful force in sports, shall make it happen. At the expiration of the current TV contract, ESPN will control all the bowls of consequence including the BCS games.
So what I’m sayin’ is those guys in the gaudy blazers who travel around the country all during the season on the Fiesta Bowl’s tit better start looking for a real job. ESPN is going to sit everybody down, especially the conferences and NCAA, and set forth how much more money there is to be made if you stop sending that old jayvee coach from Sarasota to watch games on the Orange Bowl’s tab. A sixteen team playoff will be instituted. And Lou Holtz’s bosses are going to make it happen. (And if they’re smart they’ll get rid of Holtz and his old Golden Dome runnin’ buddy, Digger Phelps, while they’re at it.)
Trust me on this one, sports fans, this is an inevitable.
